Verb
A verb is a word that expresses an action or a
state of being. A verb is a "doing" word. A verb can express:
a) A physical action (e.g., to swim, to write, to
climb).
b) A mental action (e.g., to think, to guess, to
consider).
c) A state of being (e.g., to be, to exist, to
appear).
Example :
- The item arrived late
Arrived is the verb of the
sentence.
Singing is the verb of the sentence.
- He bought me a new book in Gramedia
Bought is the verb of the sentence.
Complement
Complement is the term used for a word (or words)
which are needed to complete the meaning of an expression.
Most phrases and clauses will include a
complement of some kind. If you can't remove it from your sentence, then it's
likely to be a complement. This is how complements differ from adjuncts.
Adjuncts are optional as they are usually just descriptive. Complements are not
optional. They are essential to
ensure understanding.
Example :
- I found the cat at the park
At the park is the complement of
the sentence.
- Donald duck is funny
Funny is the complement of the
sentence.
- The item arrived at 14.12 p.m.
At 14.12 p.m is the complement of
the sentence.
